God he sounds so sexy in this song. Brilliant and very edgy. I love it especially because it seems quite far removed/different from his other songs. This is definitely one of my favourites. Keep listening, because it REALLY grows on you with every listen.

Mmmmm.....mmmmm....mmmmmm!

I'll take everything ....on the chin!

This has taken me by suprise, because I don't know if James played it or not in Camden -there were so many other "monumentals"

The past two mornings this track has had me dancing on the furniture again, just like the old days!!!!!

Speaks to me of that rush of adrenalin one gets when death spits in your face and you lick your lips defiantly and say "Mmmm....tasty!"

(no laughing!!! I know of what I speak!!!! :)

It took my some time to get used to this one, but it's one of those songs that are perfect when i feel frustrated and what to kick everyone's butt LOL

I quite like it now, and reminds me a bit of "So happy", not in the melody or anything, but that...sarcasm maybe? lol I can't really explain :P

I love this song.

I have to say I was taken aback when I first heard it cos I thought - this isn't James Blunt!!! Listening to the lyrics scared me. To me it sounds like he's saying that this world is f**ked up so I'll f**k with the world by just having a good time and not giving a t**s from now on. It also tells me that he must know something we don't know about bombs being dropped!!

Maybe I've read it completely wrong. It is quite sad though.

Anyone else think this track is too short?

It ends when you are expecting/wanting it to continue, you are left wanting more. Surely this song is begging to be stretched and elaborated on, maybe they'll try that on a live audience. I think a Curtis Stigers type saxaphone would sound good, I wonder if James will ever play with an orchestra again like the BBC session? freddy

Interesting you should think that.

" 'Cause all men die. "

Might be (un)intentionally reflective of life.. it's far too short. :)

Yes Cool that's probably the intention for the abrupt end, but I find myself wanting more, I have to replay it, there could have been a musical bridge and repeat of the lyrics, look how Same Mistake stretches out. freddy

When I first heard it I wasn't sure how I felt about it but as I listened to it more, I liked it more. The words are so true. I think everyone wants to get everything they want to out of life because we aren't go to be here forever. And we want to join others that have gone before us. It's a little bit morbid but true.

It is a pretty short song. I actually wish the whole album was longer. I want more!!!! lol

This one is one of my favourites (only got the album yesterday and have listened to it once so I'm still figuring it all out but I do know its one of my faves!)
The lyrics are amazing and they make complete sense. Get/take the most out of life because we'll all kick the can eventually so live it up. Don't let the death of others keep you behind, because you'll join them someday.

Here we are some time down the line and many more listens, and this song is still getting to me. James will need to expand this side to his writing and singing ability, and if Elton John co-wrote this with James, then that's fine by me, lets have more of the same. Nothing wrong with collaberations, there are few songwriters who don't have someone to bounce ideas off, it opens other doors, expands awareness.

I think the song shows how much James has evolved as a singer. He sings with a soulful voice that stays with you long after the song ends. David Bowie and Elton John have done R&B music. I think James would be great doing R&B, and I would love to hear him sing I'll Take Everything live in concert. Great Song!

At the concert he jokes about this being a Divorce song. I think this is one of the more passionate, thought provoking songs he sings. I think it's a reflection of how people have come to act, thinking only of themselves versus the community. However, he gets me each time he says "mmm mmm mmm"

I think the most striking and poignant concept of the song is that ALL men (and women) DO die after all, no matter what happens in a lifetime, there is no escaping it. For James to expose that in a somg shows he does understand already that everything one owns can be stripped away, your life in the form of pursuits/obligations that other people take up your time, the clothes off your back, the use of your mind and all the ideas and potential it contains that other people will use and/or abuse, appreciate or manipulate. No matter how long one lives, it never seems long enough and a minute spent doing something good or a minute spent doing something horrible can have effects that end up being long lasting- in essense forever, long after one is gone when there is no time to redo, undo or repeat what has resulted from one person's life.

PostPosted: Sun Oct 19, 2008 8:43 am    Post subject: I've conluded this song is about THEOSOPHY +1

I think this song is the closest Sir Blount becomes to wanting to save the world, or emulating Jesus Christ. It encourages humans to make the most of life, to try to experience everything (within reason and law) and he wants to 'join everyone' so we all become friends & connected (sounds cheesy I know - but when sung it melody it does sound discernible and palatable/visceral). This song is the antithesis and musical antipathy Song meaning to Coldplay's Such A Rush...

''...Have my body. Have my mind. Have my coat - take my time. These I borrowed, borrowed so far: turned to dust; fall apart...'' a Communist left wing line, Blunt got a lot of things in life for free (metaphorically) e.g. he was middle class. He got a ride up the music industry, a fast short cut. In this line he is pleading for people to step in his shoes & realise ''short cuts'' to stardom have a PRICE, pardon the capitalistic PUN. The PRICE has ''...turned to dust...''. I sense relativism & staunch nihilism is this amazing song.

In my nous & understanding Communist & Marxist thinkers have a Messiah complex (they want to save the world): they want equality & abundance for EVERYONE (at least in theory, but seldom & atrociously in practice as any Modern History high school class will indoctrinate us with), hence the line ...I'll Take EVERYTHING...I'll join EVERYONE...I'm agnostic too, with some Deism (a God that created the original spark of life, but abandoned it soon after creation & has no intervention since). People call for the ...Holy Spirit... when they are DESPERATE or have no other conceivable avenues of action, hope etc.

PS soul separate from the body? Watch the film 1408 & here's my review: http://www.amazon.com/gp/pdp/profile/A3Q21CJ51KBFRY/ref=cm_pdp_profile_friend/102-5897717-4232167

What the song could really be about, I don't think has anythig to do nihilism or Marxism. My feeling is that the song speaks about existentialism with out treading too deeply into the mine field of theosophy. The words of the song use the gender specific "man" but as a whole we refer to the human race as mankind, so I don't think lyrically speaking James was specifically describing himself, but more as a general observation of human existence.

The population of the earth as far as human beings go is increasing daily, and the resources that support life are being stretched thinner by the week in some places. However the process of being alive is probably the same for everyone of the people who are born, become aware of themselves as a living "being" and eventually most do realise the fleeting impermanence of existence.

Culturally speaking, in most 'civilised" societies clothing serves to cover the flesh, hiding it or protecting it not only from the eyes of other people but also from the elements, and a coat is usually worn to cover all other clothing that is underneath. Most people shed clothing as circumstances change- whether it is because of ambient temperature, the ocassion or activities, but as there is usually layers of other clothing under a coat, a person is still not totally exposed to all the other factors which might cause one to remove and give an outer covering like a coat to someone else. So the flesh would still be protected and what is beneath is still concealed. However, allowing the use of another's mind, body and the use of another's time might represent a more abstract and generalised existential
representation of the temporary form that a human body is while housing the spirit while engaged in the process of life.

Other's will demand much of a corporeal body- work and responsibilty, the taking on of roles according to the appearance of the body, but in all the complexities of physical existence, when life ceases, the body does eventually return to a much simpler form. Perhaps James borrrowed the term "dust" to represent a common expression in parts of westernised culture "ashes to ashes.. dust to dust.." when describing the transformation of a human body when the spirit has left it's shell. But the metamorphasis of the human body does not represent the spirit inside- the spirit is part of the energy of the universe, it is a part of all matter, it is a part of the "Holy" creation we think of as being or coming from a source many people choose to describe as a deity. You do not have to be religious to feel life itself is 'holy" or sanctified because of how fragile and amasingly temporary it is. It is for the most part here today and could be gone tomorrow. We treasure those things which have immense value and give us the most amounts of pleasure, and for the most part I truly believe most human beings resist death because the 'experiences' of the spirit/ conscious mind while in the form of flesh are pleasurable enough that we will tolerate so many horrible and negitive things while we are alive just to prolong the process of dieing everyday until the "spark" within our minds we call life expires in everyone of us.

Some of us all will "take and take " so many things while our bodies and minds are being used by others that we convince ourselves it must be tolerated BECAUSE life is such a precious 'gift', that though the body we are born with may not allow us to resist or refuse to be used or abused by others, we go along with whatever life we are born into because of the existential limitations of our bodies while we in a physical state. It has much to do with the biological survival mechanism called instinct. Human beings and all creatures with cognitive abilty spend their lives resisting and escaping death, however it is the complexities of the human mind which enable us to grasp the concept that all that we see is not necessarily the 'truth' for all people or creatures. We realise life and existence is all around us in so many different forms that we can feel but not see, that it becomes obvious to many 'minds' that life is a 'borrowed' process in that the transferal and manipulation of energy is a constant in the equation that would most aptly describe a human life.

One's spiritual beliefs rarely allow for the resistence to the life any one person is born into unless those beliefs give people permission to feel equal and to demand being treated as such by all other "spirits" contained in other human beings while we are alive. If you believe you are one with 'God' and a part of all that exists- you know you were 'made' in his/her/its image as you perceive it, and no one "spirit" is more valuable or entitled to a more 'pleasant' existential experience than any other. In that manner it becomes obvious that any one who ascribes to a religious or political school of thought denying the equality of other human beings are guilty of denying the one TRUTH we all can understand- man[kind] does and will die despite our best efforts. We cannot master the energy of the universe because everyone one of us is potentially dust, we cannot live forever, but our physical existence enables us to change how energy is used or abused. We as corporeal beings have the abilty to change how other people presently and in the future will experience life; while that does not make us gods, it gives us the choice to be a destructive power, to be a representation of the anithesis of a benevolent and loving 'god' . Every single one of of us has the potential to be the "Devil" if we so choose to and we collectively have the abilty to make other people's physical existence hell when we refuse to be empathetic towards other people's life experiences when they have had no say as to where they physically originated and must exist because of circumstances they did not choose .

I just want to ask if someone among you knows if James composed the "long version" of this song after to make the "duo" with Sinik or if he composed his song after?

Mychelle - If I understand you well, you're asking what came first, the duet with Sinik or James' song itself. From what I know, Sinik made his song 'Je réalise' after James has released ATLS.

'I'll take everything' is one of my favourite and I listened for the first time today at the CD Love, Love, Love. I'm so happy to find the first version of 'I'll take everything' on it.
Notice on the CD: 'Take One. Moment of Conception'. Immediate recording of first performance at writing session direct to laptop.
Wow! This version gives me shivers. Thank you James for giving us this first version. Soooo much appreciated. xx

This song has been co-written by James and the singer/songwriter/producer Eg White. You may be interested to know that Eg White will release a new album "Adventure Man" on May 18th in UK. The track listing appears on his Wikipedia page as well as on HMV website. His voice caught me when I heard him sing "I'll take everything" with James on the B-side of the single Love,Love,Love. Since then I wanted to discover more this talented artist and I hope he'll work again with James in the future (maybe on the third album?).

I agree with you, mdgartner!

Many boardie names on this board are obviously chosen in many ways and for different reasons.

And, Holy Spirit, selecting a name from a song, describing what touched your heart, is a very nice reason. :)

And, as far as I know, Holy Spirit is someone who touches hearts...

" Have my body. Have my mind. Have my coat. Take my time.
These I borrow. Borrow so far. Turn to dust. Fall apart. "

I think it cant be more amazing than this... Beautiful song, probably one of my favourites...
