This was aired on Monday on the Jeremy Vine Show on Radio 2. Enjoy! I only came across it by accident so thank goodness I tuned in at that moment!

This cover version is sung too slow. Even Jeremy Vine comment, if this song had a road speed it would be 2 and half miles an hour.

Ahh I disagree, I really like it! I think it suits the song, makes you take more notice of the lyrics. And that's what JB does best, IMO

OMG, I absolutely love this. It's gorgeous. I had no idea James covered this song. Where have I been? lol

James made it even more beautiful than it was in my opinion. More of a ballad.

Forgot to thank you for posting it. Got all excited. I will be listening to this one many times.

Thanks for posting TheSameMistake! Talk of an unexpected cover release! It could have been a little bit faster, but James' voice is unique. I wonder when he recorded it. BBC Radio 2 have always supported James, so it's good that they have an exclusive cover.

I'm with you on this lady b. I was expecting to love this cover version, but it's so slow that it loses all momentum, IMO. A real shame as I like the original song and had thought this version would be something special.

I think the slow speed gives a more passionate performance. If you can detach from comparing it to Elton's version it works
When singing it at that speed it seems perfect.

Live for each second without hesitation
And never forget I'm your man

Did anyone notice that James left out the above line in this song? I wonder if that was deliberate or not. Regarding the speed of the song, I honestly think this speed suits the song better. The blues suck and the funniest part now is that the original sounds too poppy and cheerful and fast for the lyrics (to me). Isn't that funny that I would never have thought that if I didn't hear this version? lol That is the beauty of music for me. There is always something to discover in a song that has been around for ages.

And I also think this version is perfect. I didn't think it was necessary for the host to make that comment at the end about the speed of the song. Artists often make songs their own and change them up when they cover them. As mentioned, we can't compare this version to the original. Both are lovely in their own ways but now I prefer this version. And I don't always love everything James does but this song is beautiful to me the way he sings it. It sounds like he's feeling the words.

I heard an interview I think early summer soon after this track was recorded the presenter said something about an Elton track being covered for Radio 2 and Elton had heard it and liked it, unless there is another Elton cover yet to be released

I'm such a slowcoach! Totally missed this!

What a lovely cover! I've always wondered what it'd sound like slowed down, and it's as good as I'd imagined
I can feel more sentiment in it than in the up-tempo original and I find myself being able to really listen to and absorb the lyrics. To my ears, James has really bluntified this one

Jeremy Vine tends to add little quips, I don't think he meant it in a bad way - he'll be more used to the faster-paced original and would probably be aware of lots of listeners hoping/expecting to hear a faster song!

Gah! Where have I been hiding? I totally missed it. I love hearing James's voice in new songs, but I have to admit it's a little too slow for my liking. It'll be perfect on early morning train rides to work.

"Bluntified" is the exact term for all the songs covered by James over the years. Thanks for posting the latest video (so to speak), the more I listen to the song, the more I like it. This voice!

Thanks Billy for the info, it adds even more to my pleasure knowing that John produced the song. I like a lot his work... and I really mean a lot!

When i first listened to it, the weather seemed to reflect my inner world. It began to rain while listening to the song, though i knew it wouldn't last long so i ran outside to see what i knew i would, when sunshine and rain inhabits the same moment a beautiful rainbow, actually there was two. I love rainbows. They're so rare.

Once again, Canada will be different with an Exclusive Canadian version of Sounds of the 80s. It's too late for me because I've already bought the CD from the UK.

http://www.thatericalper.com/2015/01/12/sam-smith-ed-sheeran-james-blunt-cover-80s-songs-for-new-release/

Sam Smith, Ed Sheeran, James Blunt Cover 80s songs for new release
Jan 12, 2015

Warner Music Canada is excited to announce an Exclusive Canadian version of Sounds of the 80s, a unique collection celebrating music’s biggest, most diverse and flamboyant decade as recorded by some of todays most popular contemporary acts. Artists including Sam Smith, Ed Sheeran, James Blunt, Passenger and Kylie Minogue make up this sensational album which is out on February 10.

Originally released in the UK this past November in conjunction with BBC Radio 2, every one of the selected 17 tracks from this Canadian single disc version are exclusive to Sounds of the 80s and is previously unreleased. All songs have been carefully chosen by each artist and truly made their own. Highlights include Sam Smith singing Whitney Houston’s ‘How Will I Know’, Ed Sheeran’s take on Bruce Springsteen’s ‘Atlantic City’, and Kylie Minogue’s version of Kim Carnes ‘Bette Davis Eyes’.

The Canadian version includes Warner Music Canada’s rising artists Scott Helman and Eleven Past One with their own versions of 80s tracks recorded specifically for this release. Scott Helman does a brilliant cover of Tom Waits – “Jockey Full Of Bourbon,” while Eleven Past One contribute a beautiful updated version of Spandau Ballet’s “True” by Eleven Past One.

The album takes its name from Sara Cox’s popular show on BBC’s Radio 2.

Sara Cox says: “On Saturday nights we bring you a big 80s disco – all the best music from the best decade and with this album we do that but with a big exciting twist – all your favorite artists putting their own spin on 80s classics. I mean, Sam Smith covering Whitney? It was meant to be.”

Radio 2 remains the biggest UK radio station pulling in over 16 million weekly listeners. Sound of the 80s is their equivalent to BBC Radio 1’s successful Live Lounge series.

Full tracklisting for the Canadian version as follows:

1. Sam Smith- How Will I Know (Whitney Houston)
2. Ed Sheeran -Atlantic City (Bruce Springsteen)
3. Scott Helman – Jockey Full Of Bourbon (Tom Waits)
4. Dido- Smalltown Boy (Bronski Beat)

Another positive effect of James being on The X Factor. This radio station in Adelaide just found out the cover.

James Blunt covers I Guess That's Why They Call It The Blues

Posted by Ashleigh McIntosh
14/09/2015

If you thought Elton John was the only one who could belt out 'I Guess That's Why They Call It The Blues' to absolute perfection, you would be wrong.

It seems Australian X Factor judge James Blunt has mastered the song in a cover late last year that has recently resurfaced.

We could listen to this all day.

But the question remains... is it better than Elton himself? We'll let you decide...
