Heroes
Written by James Blunt and Guy Chambers (previous collaborations: Tears and Rain, Wasted)

You can see it on her face
Her red eyes say she's not safe
How should she know what it means
She is only just a teen
Under her duvet's where she hides
To block the screaming late at night
She can't remember life before
Mama and Daddy went to war

All little girls are full of confusion
Cry all you want coz you're only human
Was all the love just an illusion?
Daddy's not coming home
Mama's asleep and she smells of whisky
Promise that won't be you when you're 50
Cry before the guilty clap your wings
Coz all you're heroes
Are skin and bones

Packed the small bag of things she loves
Deep inside she blames herself
She has nowhere else to go
But that sounds better than what she knows
And as she steps into the dark
Dirty hair and heavy heart
Cold, cold air inside her lungs
Catch a snowflake on her tongue

All little girls are full of confusion
Cry all you want coz you're only human
Was all the love just an illusion?
Daddy's not coming home
Mama's asleep and she smells of whisky
Promise that won't be you when you're 50
Cry before the guilty clap your wings
Coz all you're heroes
Are skin and bones

And as I heard you shut the door
Went through the window and I saw
The footsteps of my big sister in the snow
Since then not a single day has passed
Where I don't say your name and ask
Where, where did you go?

All little girls are full of confusion
Cry all you want coz you're only human
Was all the love just an illusion?
Daddy's not coming home
Mama's asleep and she smells of whisky
Promise that won't be you when you're 50
Cry before the guilty clap your wings
Coz all you're heroes
Are skin and bones

I love this song so much...

Thanks for writing down the lyrics, Mooudi!
Here are a few things that I hear differently:

Under her duvet's where she hides

She can't remember life before
Mama and Daddy went to war

Promise that won't be you when you're 50
Cry before the guilty clap your wings
Coz all you're heroes
Are skin and bones

Coco air inside her lungs
(That's what I understand too, but I think cold, cold air would make more sense. Especially in combination with the snowflake... )

And as I heard you shut the door
Went to the window and I saw
The footsteps of my big sister in the snow

Very sad song. The music is kind of "electric", I mean, I can hear some electric music features in the background. But still it's a sad, very meaningful song. I like it, although it's very different from James' other songs, in my opinion.

This song is on the Bonfire Heart EP I downloaded today.
It is a very special song, and really deserved it's place on the album, I hope many will download the EP so get to hear it otherwise they will be missing out.

It tells a story of a young girl who runs away from home after her mother and father have split up, and she is obviously suffering from neglect as she has dirty hair, her mum is asleep drunk somewhere, her father has deserted her, and she feels desperate enough to leave the only place she knows and go out into the winter's night leaving her little brother behind, and what is even sadder is her little brother has never seen her since she left.

Such a sad song, my parents divorced when I was thirteen, and my life story is too personal to share here, but the song hit a sore spot in me, and sad times in your life are not times you want to remember, in fact you blot them out, and to hear lyrics in a song like this sometimes takes you back to the past where you don't want to go, but having said that, there are many children out there who are suffering like this, and it is a song that will make us all stop and think.

I like songs like this that tell a story, it also reminds me of a song my dad used to sing to me, The Beatles song 'She's Leaving Home' but this song is sadder and it needs to be heard, but worried in case people just wait for the album and never hear it.

I have changed some of the lyrics written above, below. Hope they are correct.

You can see it on her face
Her red eyes say she's not safe
How should she know what it means
She is only just thirteen
Under her duvet's where she hides
To block the screaming late at night
She can't remember life before
Mama and Daddy went to war

Poor little girl's so full of confusion
Cry all you want coz you're only human
Was all the love just an illusion?
Daddy's not coming home
Mama's asleep and she smells of whisky
Promise that won't be you when you're 50
Fly before the guilty clip your wings
Coz all your heroes
Are skin and bones

Packed the small bag of things she loves
Deep inside she blames herself
She has nowhere else to go
But that sounds better than what she knows
And as she steps into the dark
Dirty hair and heavy heart
Co co air inside her lungs
Catch a snowflake on her tongue

Poor little girl's so full of confusion
Cry all you want coz you're only human
Was all the love just an illusion?
Daddy's not coming home
Mama's asleep and she smells of whisky
Promise that won't be you when you're 50
Fly before the guilty clip your wings
Coz all your heroes
Are skin and bones

And as I heard you shut the door
Went to the window and I saw
The footsteps of my big sister in the snow
Since then not a single day has passed
When I don't say your name and ask
Where, where did you go?

Poor little girl's so full of confusion
Cry all you want coz you're only human
Was all the love just an illusion?
Daddy's not coming home
Mama's asleep and she smells of whisky
Promise that won't be you when you're 50
Fly before the guilty clip your wings
Coz all you're heroes
Are skin and bones

I heard this song, don't know if it is good or not because of the leaking part, but I must say that is a song that gets under your skin and embrace your heart and makes it beat while your eyes are filled with tears, a feeling hard to explain, because at the same time, I feel pleasure to hear it.

That Australian Sunrise show, mentioning Carrie Fisher and her drink problem, got me thinking, I wonder if the song is about her, as she mentions in her book 'Wishful Drinking' that she started taking drugs when she was just thirteen.

The co co air, and snowflake lyrics I believe refer to drugs.

Wow, am I the only one who didn't realize you could buy the EP tracks off iTunes even if you were NOT from the UK? And by the way... what does EP mean? "early posting"? "easily proven"?

I love this song. It's a very sad one, but it definitely hits home. I agree with whoever said it's hauntingly beautiful.

Thank you guys for the lyrics and the link to Youtube, the only way I can listen to it so far. I should receive the Bonfire Heart EP soon. Thanks Sunlight for your thoughts, makes a lot of sense.

The Canadian iTunes store doesn't offer it but it wasn't supposed to offer it, so no surprise. *sigh*

Oh wow, thanks for posting this song!!!!!!!!
Hauntingly beautiful indeed!!!!! My God, talking about goosebumps!!!!!!!

I am with you jbfan, waiting as well to see this EP available for us too!
We can order it in a Belgian shop (fnac) but delivery time is estimated between 4-9 weeks (was 7-9 weeks couple of days ago!!!) Reason, they told me, is that they import it from an AMERICAN internetshop! (that imports it from Germany!) Sorry but I can't see the logic to that as Germany is our neighbouring country...
It's even more painful to see that this EP is all over our Belgian "black" (illegal) market, sold for ridiculous prices at times! Seems like they did see the logic of a short drive to Germany and sell it on on our market! What a shame that these sells won't show in the Belgian charts! And frustrating to see how they make very easy money that should go to James for making this music in the first place!
But I am going off topic here, let's enjoy this beautiful song ....

I just heard a sample of heroes and loved it! But I live in the U.S. and when I went to buy it I couldn't find it on iTunes. I don't think that the Bonfire Heart EP is available here either. Does anyone know whether the Bonfire Hearts EP or if a "Heroes" single will ever be released in the U.S. iTunes Store at some point in the future?

I received the Bonfire Heart EP and listened to 'Heroes' many many times. It's now on my list of favourites. Actually, this list is becoming very similar to the whole tracklist on the album and the EP. Thank you James for giving us so many good songs, I feel very spoiled.

Sorry in advance if it was ment to be a joke but EP is extended play there is probally a proper description out there but Singles used to have just 2 songs on the single and a B side (god I sound old) EP meant you got a few more songs or extra bits like the same song played different ways. I think the turn was coined back in the day of vinyl records

It's a very sad song, which I'm glad is not on the album. Some of the words in the song remind me of my sister who isn't in a very good place at the moment.

Still one of my all time favourite song of James. Just want to let you know the official lyrics have been added to JB's website. Only small corrections to the latest version posted here.

http://www.jamesblunt.com/lyrics/heroes-23516

You can see it on her face
Her red eyes say she's not safe
How should she know what it means
She is only just thirteen
Under her duvet's where she hides
To block the screaming late at night
She can't remember life before Mama and Daddy went to war

Poor little girl's so full of confusion
Cry all you want 'cause you're only human
Was all the love just an illusion?
Daddy's not coming home
Mama's asleep and she smells of whiskey
Promise that won't be you when you're fifty
Fly before the guilty clip your wings
'Cause all your heroes
Are skin and bones

Packed the small bag of things she loves
Deep inside she blames herself
She has nowhere else to go
But that sounds better than what she knows
And as she steps into the dark
Dirty hair and heavy heart
Cold, cold air inside her lungs
Catch a snowflake on her tongue

Poor little girl's so full of confusion
Cry all you want 'cause you're only human
Was all the love just an illusion?
Daddy's not coming home
Mama's asleep and she smells of whiskey
Promise that won't be you when you're fifty
Fly before the guilty clip your wings
'Cause all your heroes
Are skin and bones

And as I heard you shut the door
Went to the window and I saw
The footsteps of my big sister in the snow
Since then not a single day has passed
Where I don't say your name and ask
Where, where did you go?

Poor little girl's so full of confusion
Cry all you want 'cause you're only human
Was all the love just an illusion?
Daddy's not coming home
Mama's asleep and she smells of whiskey
Promise that won't be you when you're fifty
Fly before the guilty clip your wings
'Cause all your heroes
Are skin and bones
